Supervisor JUDr. Milan Lipovský, Ph.D. Abstract Both the complex system of international law and the disputed interpretation thereof in the realm of nuclear weapons create challenges when making a clear assessment of when and whether the possession, threat and use of nuclear weapons are legal. This research aims to provide clarity on these issues by completing an analysis on the current state of international law and by outlining which conditions need to be fulfilled by states for the legal possession, threat and use of nuclear weapons. The presented study finds that the system of international law is set out in such a manner which aims to eliminate nuclear weapons completely. The obligation for disarmament in the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons conditions the possession of nuclear weapons and places two requirements on nuclear weapon states: to pursue negotiations on disarmement in good faith and to bring them to a conclusion. The role of the European Union in preserving international peace and security

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the role of the European Union in maintaining international peace and security. The 1990s proved to be a decade of uncertainty and ambiguity in which both the UN, NATO, the WEU and the EU struggled to re-define themselves in relation to the radically altered security environment of the post-Cold War era. After the collapse of bipolar world, there are favorable conditions for more effective work of the United Nations Security Council as well as for greater role of international organizations to share responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The lack of military instruments to support the policy aims of the Union contributed to pressure for the development of an EU defence dimension. The experience with crisis in Kosovo has led to significant developments since the late 1990s. The EU has acquired unprecedented military capability, a security strategy to inform its use and since 2003 it has engaged in several deployments of forces under the European Security and Defence Policy. Nowadays, the Lisbon treaty seems to be another milestone in the process of framing the EU as a military actor. Role of UN peace operations in keeping international peace

(anglický jazyk) The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the activities of United Nations' peacekeep-ing operations and thus provide an answer to the question of how and with what results they contribute to providing international peace and security. The work deals with peace-keeping operations appointed under UN Security Council resolutions. I chose this topic because of the great importance of peacekeeping operations status within UN activities and because of the interest in clarifying the role of their impact on world peace and security. This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first one deals with the role of the United Nations and its position within the international peace and security. The second chapter focuses on the definition of basic terminology that most often occurs in relation to the characteristics of UN peacekeeping operations and distinguishes them from each other. The third chapter defines their types and provides the role of peacekeeping operations by showing the essential characteristics of their development, mandate, and working princi-ples. The fourth chapter presents the issue of formation of the peacekeeping operation start-ing with the process of its establishment, continuing with the law applicable to the opera-tion, ending with its financing. Role OSN v prevenci a řešení mezinárodních konfliktů: Případová studie bývalé Jugoslávie a Sierry Leone

The aim of the Masters Thesis is to analyze the role of the United Nations in conflict prevention and resolution. The theoretical framework lists a set of tools that should be followed in order to achieve a success in UN peacekeeping operations. Based on the list of the tools the Masters Thesis continues with two case studies. The case study of Former Yugoslavia and its peacekeeping operation UNPROFOR is considered to be one of the biggest failures of the UN peacekeeping. In contrary, the case study of Sierra Leoneans peacekeeping operation UNAMSIL then represents a successful UN peacekeeping operation. The Masters Thesis is concluded by a comparative analysis of these two case studies which evaluates the development and the implementation of these tools in each of the case studies. The analysis brings the answer to the research question which asks why some UN peacekeeping operations are successful whereas others completely fail.
